Lasting Recovery

Goals of Treatment

The goals of substance use disorder treatment across MVA’s continuum of care encompass a range of objectives aimed at supporting individuals in achieving and maintaining recovery from substance use disorders while promoting overall well-being. Goals include, but are not limited to, the following:

Abstinence or Reduction in Substance Use – Encouraging individuals to achieve and maintain abstinence from substance use or to reduce their substance use to safer levels.

Behavioral Change – Facilitating behavioral changes related to substance use, including addressing triggers, cravings, and coping mechanisms.

Improved Sense of Self – Working on issues of self-acceptance, self-esteem, and self-understanding help an individual increase overall self-worth and satisfaction.

Relapse Prevention – Providing tools and strategies to help individuals identify and cope with triggers and cravings to prevent relapse.

Improved Mental and Emotional Health – Addressing co-occurring mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, trauma, or other psychological concerns that may contribute to substance use.

Enhanced Coping Skills – Teaching individuals healthy coping mechanisms and stress management techniques to deal with life’s challenges without resorting to substance use.

Improved Relationships – Repairing and strengthening relationships with family, friends, and other supportive networks, and fostering healthy communication and boundaries.

Increased Social Support – Connecting individuals with peer support groups, community resources, and support networks to provide encouragement and accountability.

Skill Building – Providing education and skill-building sessions on topics such as assertiveness, problem-solving, decision-making, and goal setting to empower individuals in their recovery journey.

Holistic Wellness – Addressing physical health needs through access to healthcare services, nutrition education, exercise, and other wellness activities to support overall well-being. These services may not be provided directly by MVA staff, however referrals will be made when needed.

Improved Functioning in Daily Life – Helping individuals develop or regain the skills necessary to fulfill their responsibilities at work, school, and in their personal lives.

Treatment Engagement and Retention – Encouraging active engagement in treatment and fostering a supportive therapeutic environment that encourages individuals to remain committed to their recovery goals.

Long-Term Recovery Maintenance – Equipping individuals with the tools, resources, and ongoing support necessary to sustain their recovery efforts beyond the completion of formal treatment.

By addressing these goals within the context of substance use disorder treatment, individuals can develop the skills, resilience, and support systems needed to achieve lasting recovery and lead fulfilling lives free from the harmful effects of substance use.
